Required Safety Gear for Quarter Midgets
One of the most safety-conscious racing series for children is run by the Quarter Midgets of America (QMA). QMA has a long history of consistently updating and enforcing their racing safety equipment requirements to increase the level of protection for their young drivers. The following is a general list of the driver safety gear currently necessary to race in a QMA sanctioned event.
- Racing Gloves:
- Must be 2 layer, constructed of Nomex or similar fire resistant fabric, and contain a rating of SFI 3.2A/5 or higher (referred to as "SFI-5").
- Racing Helmet:
- SA rated 1990, 1995 or 2000 (not M rated) - or -
- SFI 24.1 for youth spec helmets.
- Face Shield:
- Only clear or amber face shields are permitted after dark, or when outdoor lights are used.
- Helmet Supports:
- Neck collars are mandatory, and must be made of a fire resistant fabric (Nomex, etc) with a SFI rating of 3.3A.
- Racing Suits:
- 2 layer suit - or -
- 2 layer jacket with legal pants* - or -
- Leather jacket with legal pants* - or -
- Heavyweight imitation leather jacket with lining - or -
- Heavyweight single layer Cordura jacket - or -
- Single layer canvass "tent type" heavyweight fabric
- Pants must be made of at least a denim material - no sweat pants, nylon pants or pajama pants.
- Pants must be long and completely cover the leg, with no exposed skin.
- A rating of SFI-5 is strongly recommended for all suits, jackets and pants.
- Arm Restraints:
- Arm restraints are required
- Racing Shoes:
- All shoes must cover the entire foot. Socks must be worn - no exposed skin.
